Stories of Building Better Lives
The week of Monday the 26th of November to the 3rd of December will see the Home To Home – Stories of Building Better Lives coming to Market Square Shopping Centre in the heart of Geelong.
This free event is being held to raise awareness to the hundreds of young people with disabilities that are being cared for in nursing homes more suited for elderly people.
The digital exhibition will showcase a wonderfully moving collection of stories from some of the young people who have disabilities many of which have acquired brain injuries and have defied doctors’ predictions in their amazing recoveries and progress. Amazingly an estimated 70 people under 50 are admitted to aged care nursing homes in Victoria alone every year.
It is an important issue for the community to understand and relevant to the implementation of the National Disability Insurance Scheme and it is hoped this exhibition will further help reduce the stigma attached to young people with disabilities, and raise much needed further pubic awareness of their struggles, challenges and triumphs in day to day life doing many of the things we take for granted.
Building Better Lives is a not-for-profit organisation that aims to raise awareness and help get these young people out of nursing homes and into a more suitable environment where it is more suitable for their age and needs.
Market Square has good wheel chair access, parking and toilets for people attending this informative event and may have disabilities or difficulties in mobility.
