2012 Geelong Cup
One of the biggest social events of the year, the 2012 Centrebet Geelong Cup promises to be a huge event. It is expected some twenty thousand spectators will be at the Geelong Racing Course to cheer.
Like always the action will not only be on the course, there will be plenty of fierce completion in the fashion stakes, especially the fashions on the field, when both the ladies and the men are sure to look their best.
Early forecasts see a cloudy day with a temperature in the low 20’s, so it should be ideal for a picnic lunch and a few glasses of bubbly.
The cup dates back to 1872 and interestingly there has only been two multiple winners of the race, this year marks the 100th anniversary of Roseview’s win who also won the race in 1914. Camerine is the only other multiple winner taking out the shiny silver in 1986 and 87. Last year saw Dunaden win the 2011 Geelong Cup, Dunaden also had a great win in the Melbourne Cup last year and also took our the Caulfield Cup last weekend.
Some say that the Geelong Cup is a great guide for the Melbourne Cup that is only a few weeks away. The winner of the race qualifies for entry into Australia’s biggest horse race, the Melbourne Cup that is only a few weeks away. Some say that the Geelong Cup is a great guide for the Melbourne Cup, Media Puzzle is another horse to take out both cups in 2002 and Americain in 2010.
There has been some very successful jokeys at the Geelong Cup, Craig Williams has had four wins since 2000 while Kerryn McEvoy and Damian Oliver have both won two races.
The Geelong Cup is classed as a Group 3 race and is set over 2400 metres. The cup is race seven on the nine race fixture and is doe to run at 4:00PM. At the time of writing Gatwood a horse from the UK and Brigantin from France look like the favourites to take out the cup, but a lot can happen between now and then…goodluck with your punting.
