2014 Australia Day Weekend Fun

With magnificent weather and so many events and activities the Geelong region is going to be the place to be this Australia Day weekend.

Here are a few of our top pics.

Festival of Sails
Corio Bay will be a spectacular sight and the Geelong waterfront will be jam packed with activities during the annual Festival of Sails. Over 400 yachts from all over Australia are competing in one the country’s oldest and most prestigious sailing events. The carnival stretching the entire foreshore will feature top bands including Tex Perkins and the Apes and Bertie Blackman just to name two, markets, food and plenty of family friendly fun. Sunday night will see the Bay FM Fireworks Spectacular which is always one of the highlights of the event.

A Day on the Green
With only a special appearance at the MCG to aid the Black Saturday bush fires in 2009 and a half time gig at last year’s AFL Grand Final Hunter’s and Collectors haven’t been seen this century. They are back playing the magnificent lawns of the Hill Winery in Waurn Ponds on the 25th of January with some of the best bands in Australia, including You am I, Something for Kate and British India. Limited tickets are still available at writing, and there are special deals for Cat’s members.

While we are on the subject of classic Australia music, legendary band Pseudo Echo is playing the Barwon Club on the 25th of January.

Corio Model Railway Exhibition
A treat for young and old, the Corio Model Railway Exhibition at the West Geelong Town Hall this weekend is a must. The exhibition in its 40th year will feature some amazing railway layouts with incredible detail and craftsmanship. You can also meet some expert hobbyists, learn a few tricks of the trade and pick up your very own train set or special piece for your collection at the wonderful trade stalls.

Australia Day at Rippleside
The free family fun day ran by the Lions Club of Corio Bay and the Geelong Australia Day Committee has been a favorite event on our national day for generations. This year thousands are expected to attend this free day on the lawns of Rippleside Park overlooking the magnificent sight of the sailing action on Corio Bay. There will be so much for the whole family to see and do including petting zoos, rides, bands, face painting and even pony rides. Special guest will include Dazzling Dan the Magic Man and the Mik Maks, The fun starts at 11:00AM.

Geelong Caravan Camping and Outdoor Expo
Thinking of enjoining a bit of the Australian outdoors, well the Geelong Caravan Camping and Outdoor Expo at the Geelong Showgrounds this weekend is the place for you. Catch up on the latest trends in carvaning and camping. Talk to the experts and see a wide range of equipment from the leading suppliers. The event has something for the whole family even gourmet food and wine from across the Geelong region and a huge fishing show.

 Triple J Hottest 100 Parties

It wouldn’t be Australia Day without the biggest music countdown in the world, the Triple J Hottest 100.. Intown’s pick is Daft Punk’s Get Lucky with Lorde Royals coming in at Number 2.  Whats yours?   Some of the pubs around the region are having Triple J Hottest 100 Parties, including the Odyssey Tavern and Brewery, The Belmont Hotel and Jack & Jill who are even putting on a sausage sizzle- yummy!

If you know a pub playing the countdown drop us a line on Facebook or Twitter @Intown geelong and we will publish it.
