Geelong is the host of the 2006 World
Life Saving Championships which will bring some of the
world's finest life savers to Geelong.
The championships have only been held
in Australia once before, Manly in Sydney during 2000. The
event is held every two years, Viareggio, in Tuscany,
Italy being the last host. The events run for 14 days with
events including open water and still water swimming, board
and beach sprints, inflatable rescue craft and surf boat
rowing.
This event is free to the public the
new Kardinia Pool and Lorne beach are the venues and
Waterfront Geelong's Deakin University and
Four
Points Sheraton Hotel will be used for seminars and
functions. The events run from from 10-25th of February.

A new 4.41 million dollar pool has
been built at Kadinia Park for the people of
Geelong. This will be a centerpiece of the Rescue
2006 swimming events. million) This
state-of-the-art 10-lane pool measures 50 x 25 x 1.8
metres and is FINA compliant.
As part of this major event the International Lifesaving
Sports Conference will be held at he
Mecure
Hotel on February 20th. This is where coaches, officials
and administrators get together and plan the sports future.
This event will get wide media attention and help reinforce
Geelong and the Surfcoast as a great holiday destination. TV
coverage is going to be covered by Channel 9 and it expected
highlights will be beamed around the world. There is
also a planed DVD of the event to be released shortly after.
There are some huge teams from overseas booked in including
over 100 from New Zealand, over 80 from Canada and very
large Japanese and South African Teams.
Legendry lifesaver Monique Driessen from the Netherlands is
also planning to make the trip to the 2006 Rescue
competition and will be a major draw card. She recently won
13 medals at the European Championships in the pool.
