Last year’s Streets are Alive festival in Geelong was huge and featured performers like ex Goanna lead Shane Howard and Archie Roach. This year the festival is back and it looks even bigger and better.
The free festival takes place on Geelong’s beautiful waterfront and locations around the city on the weekend of the 10th and 11th of November 2013 marking the festival’s third year.
The festival showcases many local artists and performers and much of it is just a little different or even quirky with many interesting and sometimes out there displays or performances creating a bit of escape our routine day to day lives.
There will be plenty of music, visual arts, dance and performing arts to enjoy. Musical highlights include Chris Wilson and Sarah Carroll who will be performing on the Customs House Lawn between the Edge and Sailors Rest on Sunday afternoon.
The Animal Monsters from Now exhibition promises to be pretty interesting and fun. This exhibition will feature works by artists from Art Day South. They have produced plaster sculptures of imaginary animals from research they undertook with the Museum of Melbourne. This exhibition has travelled from the Melbourne Fringe Festival where it was a great hit. This exhibition can be seen on the Sunday at Steampacket Gardens.
On the Saturday evening between 7:30 pm an 8:00 pm Eastern Beach reserve will play host to Butterfly Hands- Poetry In Motion. This wonderful performance brings together the languages of AUSLAN in a performance aimed at breaking down barriers between deaf people and hearing communities. Butterfly Hands – Poetry In Motion” brings together the languages of AUSLAN, English and music in a unique performance that seeks to break down the barriers between the deaf and hearing communities. There will be a performance of a poem called Butterfly Hands that is most moving and has been created by members of the Deaf community. Also performing will be Tiffany Eckhart and the Tides of Welcome Choir. A lantern parade will follow the performance and make its way along the foreshore to the Carousel pavilion.
The National Wool Museum in Moorabool Street will play host to a amazing art exhibition by local artist, this exhibition takes place on the Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm on the top level of the centre.
The streets will be alive with plenty of roaming entertainment including the Circus Fireman who have a worldwide reputation of entertaining contemporary circus performances. The skills of Angus and Matilda are sure to thrill young and old.
Beavers Shaker Crew a hip hop and break dancing performance won last year’s award for the Bell Ringer Award and they are an amazing sight to see, as is Tap That a tap-dance trio with some pretty cool dance moves.
Geelong RSL Pipes and Drums will have their bagpipes finely tuned for a great performance of stirring Scottish music. While Hoop Fusion can do some pretty clever moves with a hula hoop, you won’t believe your eyes.
Look out for the Above Average Joe Show. Joe is a juggler, acrobat and pretty clever performer. He took out the Joker Trophy last year for a non-musical street performance. Lauren and Sheridan Harvey better known as Lash 78 are also performing they have amazing harmonies and have a great sound. Another highlight is Susan Arderm she plays the accordion and is well known as a great Geelong street performer.
