UCI Road World Championships

The world’s best cyclists are in to Geelong in what is one of our biggest events ever. The 2010 UCI Road World Championships is one of the world’s great cycle races, in fact second only to the Tour de France and is leaving Europe for one of the few times in its eight decades of history and it is being held in our great city this week. Thousands are expected to line our city streets over the weekend to cheer the worlds finest.

The event is expected to attract over 400 of the worlds best, coming from over 60 countries. Competing in 5 days of competition in and around the Geelong region from the 29th of September to the 3rd October.

Geelong fans will be out in force to support our local cycling legend Cadel Evans who is defending his 2009 winning title which he won in last years event held in Mendrisio, Switzerland taking out the rainbow jersey.

The opening race will start in Melbourne’s Federation Square and finish with a city loop of the Geelong central business district and spectacular waterfront while other days of competition take in the inner suburbs, waterfront and Eastern Park precincts, with plenty of great vantage points for spectators. The course has been designed by Olympian and six time world championship representative John Trevorrow, and has plenty of tough climbs and beautiful Geelong scenery for both the elite athlete and spectator.

Many spectators are expected to take advantage of the great positions along our magnificent waterfront, where the huge expo will take place. There will be displays, giant screen, merchandise, food and drink and event information. The newly refurbished Cunningham Pier complex formerly known as Smorgy’s will also feature as of the event expo sites.

Tens of thousands of visitors are expected to descend on Geelong for the event and extra train and bus services will be on hand to cater for the influx of cycling enthusiast. Vline alone has announced some 20,000 additional train seats to Geelong during the event. As well as thousands flocking to Geelong, tens of millions more especially in Europe will be watching the action as part of the huge television and internet coverage.
