Geelong City Dining
In recent years Geelong’s dining scene has boomed with dozens of new and exciting tastes and venues opening up all over the city and surrounds. There are plenty of choices for everyone with a huge array of international flavours like, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Thai and there are Indian restaurants popping up like mushrooms offering some amazing curries.

Geelong has a dining experience for everyone, we have everything from a casual and very affordable meal right up to the five star silver service gourmet’s delight.
Then there are the Geelong institutions, places that are like no where else and Geelong is famous for, like the Rheingold Bavarian Restaurant which is more of an experience than just a night out. Host Erik and family put on a huge smorgasbord and even have a parade of the spit roasted pig and fun floor show. It is a great place for a breakup of special night out with friends. There’s Fisherman’s Pier or Fisho’s as it has been affectionately know for decades, down on the waterfront. There’s no better pizza than the Wood Oven in Mercer Street and you haven’t been to Geelong unless you have had a big juicy burger from Texas Burgers.
Our pubs are also a great place for a meal with many around the region offering not only great choices but special deal nights including the traditional Parma & Pot nights or schnitzel nights and the like. There is a deal at one of the pubs just about every night of the week.
Over recent years the vibrant Geelong waterfront has seen a wide range of dining experiences open. As we mentioned earlier Fisherman’s Pier is the waterfront’s oldest and much loved dining experiences but there’s so much more, another of city’s premier dining venues, as is Le Parisian above the Wharf Shed and there’s some great new choices under the Edge Tower looking over the bay. The most dominant building on the waterfront is Cunningham Pier, once known as Smorgy’s the entire venue has recently been refurbished into a range of dining experiences with spectacular food to match the bay views.
Under the new pedestrian flyover at Westfield in Yarra Street is another new strip of dining, there’s the Hog’s Breath Cafe serving burgers and curly fries, The Groove Train with some tasty pizzas and the like, Japanese, Gourmet Burgers and a few other fine cafes and some of Geelong’s best ice creams.
The Geelong central area has some great cafes many with alfresco dining where you can kick back and enjoy the sun and the sights while experiencing some good service and fine food.
Moorabool Street with its tall Washington Palm trees and wide landscaping has become a popular place for alfresco dining- especially below Malop Street. Options include The Phoenix Hotel, Black Bull’s Spanish tapas, noodles from Thai Influence and Geelong’s tastiest home style Italian cooking at Leo’s Rimini Italian Restaurant to name a few.
For the city’s best pizza and takeaway head to Mercer Street, the gateway into the city. Many of the kitchens are open into the early morning and are very popular after a night out on the town.
For a quick takeaway there are plenty of bakeries with many within a few metres of the Mall in Moorabool Street where you can get a quick bite or hot pie. Most of the big chain coffee shops and fast food chains are in easy reach and Westfield Bay City has a huge food court with a wide array of quality cafes for a bite to eat in-between bargain shopping.
