Portarlington is a base for many of the
regions scallop fishermen which dredge the bay searching for
these prized creatures.
The Portarlington Pier catches of snapper, mullet, garfish
and whiting are common throughout the year.
Boat owners flock to the area for snapper, which feed in an
area about 2 km straight off the pier.
There are grassy areas to the right of the pier which offer
fantastic habitats for King George
Whiting, while the
popular ground dwelling flathead are plentiful throughout
the bay.
Steele's rocks are slightly to the right of the pier, here,
as well as getting snagged you may catch luderick which seem
plentiful in this small area.

Portarlington is a great place for camping, a picnic or just a
quite spot of fishing off the pier that is located only meters
from the Grand Hotel and the restored rotunda.
Late in the 19th century paddle
steamers began bringing Melbournian holiday
makers, who enjoyed, and continue to enjoy the
fishing, water sports, picnicking, camping and safe
bathing the area has to offer.
