The Geelong Art Gallery


Geelong Art Gallery Section of Fredrick McCubbin's Bush Burial The Geelong Art Gallery is considered one of the state's finest provincial galleries.  

The gallery was established in 1896 and the current building dates back to 1913. The land was donated by the City Council and building was financed by public subscriptions and a government grant.

There have been many expansions to the building with major changes in years, 1937, 1958 and 1970.    The collection of late 19th and early 20th century paintings by British artists and members of the Royal Academy reflect the prevailing taste of the time  

There are works by Louis Buvelot, Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton, Rupert Bunny, E. Phillips Fox and the Galleries best know painting Frederick McCubbin's 'Bush Burial'.

Contemporary artists in the collection include Fred Williams.   

As well as many temporary exhibitions from local and overseas artists, the gallery houses more than 3,000 works, many displayed on a rotating basis so that a proportion can be viewed at any time.    It is open Tues. to Fri. from 10am. to 5pm.; on
Sat, Sun. and public holidays from 1pm. to 5pm. It is closed Mondays, Good Friday and Christmas Day.
 


A small admission charge applies with family and concession rates available. Conducted tours of the permanent collection are on Wed. and Sun. at 2.30pm. with afternoon tea provided for a token fee.
