Back in 1851 about 81 hectares of land was set aside for the
Geelong Botanical Gardens. But with the harsh dry summer
conditions it became impractical to develop a huge area of
the reserve into our Botanical Gardens.
Over time an area of around 2 hectares was developed and
later grew to around double that.
The Geelong Botanical Gardens are located in Eastern Park to
the east of the city centre.

The brand new 21st Century Gardens
are making the most of plants which require little
water.
The Gardens are open daily from 7:30 to 5pm weekdays,
staying open to 7:30 on Weekends where they are a favorite
setting for wedding photography and picnics.
The gardens house many rare and exotic plants including
giant palms which were planted over 140 years ago.
Many sculptures and works or art are housed throughout the
gardens, including the famous Eastern Beach Cranes which
were replaced with replicas and displayed at a more secure
location within the confines of the gardens.
Guided tours are conducted on regular basis and special
themed tours are also held. For further information please
call the "Friends of the Gardens" on 03 5222 6053.
