We saved the best til last

The photo really says it all- Randy’s Donuts- the biggest, the tasitest and probably the most fatening donut we have found on this trip- and you might ask– what were they like- well one word- delicious. it was hard to stop at just one. Sadly this is our last day in the land of donuts and diet coke its off to the airport and back to sanity until our next adventure- where ever that may be. see you when we get home!!

Beverly Hills- the shopping ground for the rich or lets face it pretentious. Every big brand is here Cucci, Catier, That giu who was Di’s mate before they both died,  Amanim Lois whats his name- you know them- You wouldn’t be even able to fart in the shops they are so beautiful- fat chance of letting us two in.  You pull up in your Mini or your H2 Hummer then hop out with your stupid poodle in a bag then prance in like a princess- and the girls do the same. There’s even some fancy place selling gum boots (you know the ones you get at bunnings for 20 bucks)  $700 US with a plastic flower on the side- who in their right mind would buy them?

Freaks on the Beach

Venice Beach is the other big beach in Los Angeles- This one is full of freaks weirdos and other interesting and unusual people. A bit of a hippie spot and many have had just too much weed. There is a mile or two of paved walkway jam packed with somewhat dodgy Tshirt and food places then the beach side is markets the whole stretch. Most of the stalls are manned by people a bit too much in touch with there inner peace and not in touch with too much realitiy, but then again this is Los Angeles, and the city would be much easier to handle with a little help of plenty of green stuff, only problem sometimes enough is not enough. There’s jewelery, paintings, clothing, nick nacks and alls sorts of stuff. Plus plenty of freaks- some looking for a job and all they want in return is weed.  Most haven’t had a wash since the the sixties not tat they can remember, but they all seem to be enjoying the sun in their own special way and sure are interesting for the visitor. The muscle beach complex is another interesting highlight on the beach, here hulk like body builders don their tiny licra suits barely covering their buldging bits to parade and pound their tight bodies really just for the pleasure of being watched or noticed. The muscles are incredible, arms that could wrestle 100 men and thats just the women.
The area is also known for the TV series Bay Watch- other than the familiar life guard stands theres no sight of Hasslehoff or Pamela Anderson lookalikes. Maybee they are out having some hooch with the locals.

Santa Monica – a nice little place

Santa Monica is one of the beach suburbs of LA – it reminded us a bit of Manly in Sydney or even St Kilda. Laid back heaps of cafes and little outlets and a great beach with squid port. A hidden treasure in LA

Universal City Walk

Just up the road from Hollywood is Universal City Walk its a huge entertainment complex attached to Universal Studios- this is as close to a theme park as I am allowed to go- I’ve been told NO MOUSE! (I will get him back). Heaps of nightlife, cafes, pubs and plenty to do. Looks real cooll at night when the neon comes on. A real fun place. We found another of our favorite breweries Karl Strauss, they make some great beers.

Horray for Hollywood

Last time we were in Hollywood it didn’t have much going for it. Dirty, full of sleaze, adult movie houses (which starred Debbie), street walking ladies and a lot of bad apples and not much else. Well things have changed there’s virtually no sleaze, and really no reason to go. Sure you can see the stars on the side walk- whoopy do, take a nice picture of the Mann Chinese Theatre, which is pretty flash and the new Kodak theatre were they have the Oscars is worth seeing but the place really hasn’t got anything going for it.  There’s some thrift shops a few souvenir shops and that’s about it. Not the glamorous place you would imagine.

All aboard Air Force 1

We visited the Ronald Regan Libary on the outskirts of LA to check out the Airforce 1 707 which is on display. You were able to go aboard and see how Ronny Ray-gun ran the USA from the air. Much more cramped than we were expecting- our Qantas flight on Wedneday night has much more leg room and more comfort. But our’s dosn’t have a Presidental Seal on the Toilet- Ronny’s did.  The place was pretty impressive, it had pretty much everything Ronny had ever owned on display and even his Oval office- poor old Ronny was even planted in the back yard.

Well the whole country is getting ready to vote in a new president, and there is a sence that the new guy is going to be Obama, and he is magically going turn America back on and everything is going to be wonderful again… well lets hope they are right, but this place is pretty broken and there’s a lot of work to do to get the place rocking again, just the amount of homeless people on the streets is enough to make you think America might be a bit too interested in things outside the country to care about its own people.  Who knows– There’s a real sence of releif here that the reign of George W is just about over,  It will be interesting in years to come after seeing Ronny’s library how the country will judge  George W, but i’m sure some rose coloured glasses and a bit of time he will be remembered as he tough guy who protected the US in its worst hour.. time will tell.

All aboard the Queen Mary

For a bit of a treat we stayed the night on the Queen Mary in Long Beach California. This historic ship is now a hotel.  Long Beach is a really nice layed back spot, its hard to belive you are in LA.  There was free shuttle into town and lots of night action- we found a great brewery with all day Sunday happy hour.
