Viva Las Vegas

We made it into Las Vegas about 5 PM on Saturday afternoon, and started with a drive up and down the strip just to see what had changed since last time.. and as usual a lot.  When we first visited Vegas. it was a sleazy mafia city that was trying to shake its image by making itself more family friendly.  They were in the process of building huge casinos that had themes and plenty for kids and the whole family to enjoy.  You got Volcanoes, Pirate Ships, Circus, MGM theme parks, castles and the like.  Then a few years later they realized families and gambling don’t mix too well and they started making the area more adult, keeping with the themes the Luxor pyramid, New York New York, Paris came on the scene.. and brought luxury and a new wave of people.  Today there is lots of building going on at most of the major casinos adding bigger and more luxurious shopping centres, quality restaurants and high end night spots.   Its really gone up market.. there are still a few smaller places offering the budget end of the market but the target audience is certainly aimed at the higher end of average.

Each of the casinos have something to get you in,, wether it be storm troopers and scantly clad policewomen as per our hotel- Planet Hollywood,  Amazing priced buffets, heaps of shopping, our hotel alone had a mile of shopping or some other gimmick.

These pics.. The Bellagio has the waterfall and amazing harvest display. Planet Hollywood has the Arabian themed shopping arcade (they were once the Aladdin) and The French village is inside the Paris complex. The supercar and big wooden structure inside the mall is from the Aria, one of the newer casinos to open.

Laughin on the Colorado River

Laughlin, this town is on the Nevada border on the Colorado River and is home to a dozen or so casinos (and not much else). We called into the Colorado Belle, a casino on the river shaped like a huge paddle steamer, out the front was a German beer festival with some German bands so we hung around the town for a few hours visiting a few of the local casinos. The town is not like Vegas but more like Atlantic City, catering to the pensioner set.

Oatman Arizona

Oatman is a tourist town come old ghost town that has wild burros or donkeys roaming the streets.  The town was pretty cool, plenty of gift shops, arty farty stuff and plenty of spiritual things like dream catchers, fortune tellers and the like.

66 to Oatman

Today we continue our journey to the US West coast and travel the most scenic piece of Route 66 we have come across yet to Oatman. There are some breathtaking scenes, huge cliffs, canyons and a great windy narrow road.

Chloride – Arizona

Later in the arvo we visited the old gold mine  ghost town of Chloride, this place was around 25 main away and is now home to a lot of artists. It was a real fun place, their is an old west type ghost town setup where they stage gunfights on the weekend. We also a beer in the local pub that was more a shack than a pub.

We had lunch at a 60s style diner in Kingman and then went to a aircraft museum near the airport, it was this town that scrapped all the old planes after ww2.

Williams AZ

We planned to have two nights in Williams because Thursday we had a train ride booked to the Grand Canyon, but the Government put a end to that and wouldn’t let anyone in the park due to the Government Shutdown. This is the first time we have had any issues. We decided to cancel the second night accom and move on towards Vegas a bit slower than planned. The weather when we arrived was a beautiful sunny 22 ish but come morning we had the first show of the season. There was 2 or more inches and we got caught in a snow storm while driving,, a weird experience for someone who has never been anywhere where its snowing, pull over in the carpark and wait for it to ease. It wasn’t cold and the afternoon became sunny and not to bad.
