Airshow over San Francisco

The navy put on a spectacular airshow over the San Francisco Bay to celebrate Navy Week. The Blue Angels performed for an hour with tens of thousands looking on both on land and from hundreds of watercraft on the bay. Its a great day here, mid to high 20’s and the bluest of blue skies.

A drive down to the Big Sur

We took a fantastic drive down the Californian Coastline and had lunch overlooking the ocean watching wales, there were about 10 of them playing around close to shore. We continued down the coast and went into the forest for a rugged but spectacular drive, there were deer, squirrels and huge pine trees. We headed back just as the sun was going down over the Pacific Ocean, a spectacular sight.

The San Jase neighbourhood is pretty vibrant with some great shops, dining and places to relax. Its in the heart of Silicon Valley with Google, HP, Microsoft and Apple all close by and about a hour south of San Francisco.

Google in Silicon Valley

The day started early with a 6:15 am flight out of Oklahoma City. There was a quick stop over at Denver before landing at San Jose, about an hours drive south of San Francisco just before lunch.

After settling in and a some lunch and a few quick beverages we are taken on a tour of the Google headquarters by a friend who works there. Amazing facilities all set in parkland. People ride bikes between buildings, theres amazing office spaces with plenty of cool artefacts and designs plus free gourmet canteens and lots of free activities for there huge and workforce.

On to Tulsa Oklahoma

We continued up Route 66 to Tulsa Oklahoma about an hour and a half out of Oklahoma City. There were plenty of shabby and run down towns to visit. They had all but been abandoned since the highway bypassed the towns.

Route 66 around Oklahoma City

Outside the city and onto Route 66 things went to the quirky and rundown, with plenty of weird roadside attractions and amusing signs

Oklahoma City

We reach Oklahoma City, its looks about as big as Adelaide. Fairly neat and tidy sort of place but no shopping or retail in city centre, its all business. The memorial to the bombing attack was pretty striking and done very well. With all the fears of terrorism and people from other countries and different beliefs this horrific event in 1995 where an angry white guy’s act killed 168 people and injured hundreds more has been pretty much overlooked. Around our hotel is the old warehouse area called brick town, this has been transformed into a bit a entertainment district with bars, clubs and lots of restaurants. The photo of the ball park was taken from our hotel room.

Elk City Museums

Elk City in Oklahoma is home to the National Route 66 Museum so we stop off for a look only to find that the $5 entry fee got us into several museums on the site including a few historical houses and a interesting farm machinery museum.
