In Denver

We got to Denver at 2pm yesterday, the flight was full and a bit bumpy coming into Denver. We are staying at the crown plaza in the city, it’s an OK spot with plenty of pubs and shopping around the corner. It was a little damp yesterday arvo so we went to the brewpub near the hotel for a late lunch. We ordered the $5 nachos as starter and it ended up being big enough for 4 people! so we didn’t order a main. Looks like it will be nice today so we are going to have a look around the city. The pic above is from our 17th floor hotel room.

Paul McCartney in San Diego

We went to Petco Park in San Deigo to see Paul McCartney put on a spectacular show. He was on stage for over three hours and didn’t stop, he played 39 songs and plenty of Beatles hits including Get Back, Hey Jude, Paperback Writer, Back in the USSR, Blackbird, Lovely Rita, Lady Madonna, All my loving, eight days a week.  He did an amazing Helter Skelter towards the end and finished the show off with Golden Slumbers, Carry the weight and the End, amazing.  Other highlights a tribute to George Harrison when he sung  Something and an incredible fireworks and laser display during Live and Let Die.- The stadium was huge there would have been 60-70,000 people there and being a baseball field the distance is pretty close so there was a fantastic view. we have plenty more pics and some great video we will put up we get a chance.

Freaks of Venice Beach

We walked down to Venice Beach, that is about 4 kms from the hotel for a look at some of the alternate lifestyles, and boy were there some interesting freaks. The shanty town come market place stretches about a km along a wide boardwalk There are heaps of souvenir and touristy shops and stalls on one side and a hippie art market on the other. It looks like most of the stall holders live on site living on the few dollars they get for their artwork. The majority of their income would would be spent one of the several legalised “for medical use’ weed dealers mixed in with the tourist shops. Some of the artwork is pretty out there and there are plenty of stall holders who have been out in the sun a little too long as they are with the fairies.

We grabbed some lunch from a great brew pub and sat on a table with a couple of the members of punk band Issues. They were with a designer working on their merchandising artwork for the upcoming Warped tour. They seemed nice enough guys, but real hard core punks, well i’m not sure, lemon lime and bitters, for drinks and one had a salad while the other had half a burger and asked for doggy bag for the other half to eat later.

Grand final live in LA

We went shopping for a few cables and did some magic streaming the grand final from our home computer to a laptop in our hotel room and then to the plasma. Worked a treat, live channel 7 coverage. Washed the steak and lobsters down with some cheap Mexican beer and some complementary red wine and made a great night of it.

The lobster

We headed out for a few refreshments and then to the Lobster, a few doors down from our hotel at the entrance to Santa Monica Pier. For a huge feast featuring  giant crustaceans,  juicy steaks and tastiest fries ever, think they were covered in truffle oil and parmesan.  very yummy.

Ice hockey- the mighty ducks not so mighty

A great night out at the ice hockey Staples Stadium in LA. The Mighty Ducks went down to the LA Kings in a shoot out, very electric atmosphere and strangely most of the thumping music was Aussie AC/DC and Jet. Amazing stadium, its probably the size of Rod Laver but its twice as high a real colosseum, they hold the grammys here and this where Michael Jacksons funeral was held. Elton plays a couple of sold out shows here next week.

The Plane

The flight is pretty comfortable, we started our journey with a Champagne and a bowl of mixed nuts while on the tarmac, as you do. There were a few bumpy patches as we left the Australian coast around Woolongong just in time for the laska soup, fortunately none ended up on the shirt, I really dont know how that happened.

We both ordered the chicken and out came to completely different meals, dont know what was going on there, but there were both good and they even trusted us with real knives and forks in these days of heightened security.

There is a bar at the back of our cabin that is pretty cool but 11 hours out of LA we exhaust their supply of Fat Yak and have to switch to Peroni (mixed with a few glasses of red for good luck) The hosties must be a bit bored as they keep bringing more beer to us about every 15 minutes. Hopefully there is a supply of Peroni or we might have to switch to Crown Larger – please god be plenty. I think the bourbon will get a go before the crownies go any where near our lips.
