Balboa Park

San Diego’s Balboa Park would have to be the most spectacular and beautiful cultural hub we have seen anywhere in the world. Originally built for a world fair like expo in 1915 and again in 1935 the park is filled with incredible architecture that is just stunning. The park houses museums, galleries, the zoo and many other cultural venues.

Auto Museum

Next to the Air and Space Museum was an auto museum, a great collection of cars and bikes. Their special exhibition was celebrating the wagon where the 1961 woody falcon wagon was star attraction.

Air & Space Museum

San Diego has a wonderful Air and space museum with plenty to see. The huge circular floor plan housed dozens of beautifully restored planes and jets. The foyer housed the actual Apollo 9 capsule that was pretty special.

Coronado Hotel

Gee this place is flash, it is the second largest wooden building in the world and has been a setting for many huge films including Some Like it Hot staring Maryln Monroe and even the inspiration of the Emerald City in the Wizard of OZ.

A living tribute to freedom

Not entirely sure if it is a living tribute to freedom but the USS Midway is one impressive boat. This huge aircraft carrier is now a museum docked on San Diego’s waterfront. A great tour with plenty of tight stairs and heaps of things to see, including a impressive collection of jets and helicopters.

Ye Olde Town

The mornings activities included visiting the San Diego Old Town a historic recreation on the olden days, a bit like Soverign Hill without a entry fee. There was plenty of things to see and even more souvineers and trinkets to buy.

Keep it classy San Diego

Thought we better ease ourselves in so we are keeping it classy Sandiego in day one. A bit of a walk around the city followed by a taco lunch with a few happy hour pints.  Then a quick refresh and its complementary happy hour (or should i say hour and a half) refreshments and snacks at the hotel.

Charging to San Diego

We cruised down the Interstate 405 in our lovely Chrysler Charger to our first destination San Diego. We soon remembered how fast the freeway ran and how hideously big some of the SUVs and pickups were. The trip took about an hour and a half. It’s much warmer and brighter than the last few weeks in Geelong and there’s none of that bloody wind.

Finally on the Scarebus  A380

This is the first time we have been on the Airbus 380, we were on the boarding ramp in LA on another notorious road trip adventure a few years back, when we were ready to jump on one as Qantas grounded the fleet after one nearly fell out of the sky flying over Indonesia from Singapore. That night was crazy, we ended up taking over a private airport lounge that Diana Ross has just exited before cleaning them out of Boubon. We later took a 747 that must have served in World War I home only to loose our luggage for a week. Anyway back to today’s story, The plane is massive and very comfy, the Qantas hosties just keep the wine and beers coming to the point I said no more. so they made my bed up and I had a bit of a snooze.
